U.S. News Black Doctors Endorse Routine HIV TestingSeptember 28, 2006 The National Medical Association, the nation's largest association of African-American physicians, has announced its endorsement of CDC's call for routine voluntary HIV testing in medical settings. "One of the reasons for such high HIV mortality in the African-American community is the disease is diagnosed so late in the course of the illness," said Albert Morris, the organization's newly installed president, noting that "routine testing is critical in the fight against this disease." Morris said NMA is also asking that CDC's recommendations be expanded to include mandatory HIV testing of persons entering the correctional system. NMA represents some 30,000 black doctors.
