The following data represent the cumulative totals of reported AIDS cases in the United States. Included are the total number of reported AIDS cases, and the number of reported AIDS cases by demographic category in the U.S. Total Reported AIDS Cases In the U.S., the cumulative number of reported AIDS cases from the beginning of the epidemic in 1981 through December 1996 is 581,429. 362,004 deaths from reported AIDS cases have occurred since the beginning of the epidemic. During January-June 1996, the number of AIDS deaths was 13% lower than during January-June 1995, the first time such a significant decrease in AIDS death rates has occurred. Reported AIDS Cases By Race/Ethnicity In the United States, the cumulative total number of reported AIDS cases among the following populations is: WHITE, NOT HISPANIC: 268,856 cases (46.2% of the total case count)
