New York AIDS Institute Adopts AAHIVM Criteria as Alternative
In February 2002, the New York AIDS Institute expanded the availability of quality HIV care by extending the designation of HIV Specialist in NY State to practitioners who have credentialed as HIV Specialists through the AAHIVM. Practitioners who have achieved the AAHIVM HIV Specialist credential by fulfilling the AAHIVM requirement for management of antiretroviral therapy in HIV patients in an ambulatory care setting are eligible.
The New York AIDS Institute administers CDC, NY State, and Ryan White Title II funding, which provide funding for a variety of prevention and health services to HIV patients in NY State, across the entire continuum of needs. Among the many programs they administer are the state uninsured pools (ADAP, ADAP+, and Home Care), which serve over 18,000 patients at any given time and have served over 50,000 patients over the years.
The Academy is pleased that its definition is being so well received and that its mission to extend quality care to all HIV patients has been advanced in NY State. We hope that many other states will follow suit in the near future.
