Washington, D.C. -- The American Academy of HIV Medicine (AAHIVM) has launched its 2006 credentialing exam period. Applications for the 2006 credentialing exam will be accepted June 1 - July 31, 2006; the exam will be available to qualifying applicants August 1 ? 31, 2006.
AAHIVM's exclusive credentialing program offers all frontline HIV health care providers -- including physicians, nurse practitioners and physician assistants -- the opportunity to be recognized as AAHIVM HIV SpecialistsTM (AAHIVS) by successfully completing a comprehensive exam on HIV-specialized medical care. Obtaining the credential demonstrates a provider's knowledge, skills and expertise in this specialized field. Membership in AAHIVM is not required to apply for credentialing. The AAHIVS credential is valid for two calendar years beginning January 1st of the year following successful completion of the exam.
To be eligible for the exam, a health care provider must:
"The AAHIVS credential demonstrates to patients, colleagues and employers that HIV care providers voluntarily support quality standards of HIV care," said Dr. Howard Grossman, AAHIVM executive director.
"I value my credential as an HIV SpecialistTM," said AAHIVM member Sara Back, FNP, MPH, AAHIVS, a nurse practitioner from New York City. "I think it is important for my patients to know that they are being treated by someone with knowledge and experience in providing quality HIV care. In addition, I find it important to be part of the process that continues to elevate the standard of what it means to be a HIV care provider. This is important for me, my patients, and the field in general."
