The AIDS Legal Council of Chicago is an organization devoted solely to providing a full spectrum of sensitive, quality legal services to financially needy people affected by HIV. The Council's mission is to see that people with HIV/AIDS in the Chicago area received the full benefits of their rights under the law.

In addition to a staff of eight, the Council currently maintains a roster of over 100 volunteer lawyers from many of Chicago's most respected law firms. Legal areas covered by attorneys include estate planning, social security and public aid representation, guardianship, employment discrimination, insurance discrimination, tenant's rights, health provider discrimination, clemency, and debtor/creditor problems. The Council also operates an on-site project at Cook County Hospital, advocating for public benefits (social security and public aid) on behalf of all patients with HIV who qualify.

The Council participates in educating many groups about HIV-related legal issues, through speaking engagements, technical assistance workshops, and training sessions. The Council also maintains a library of resource materials for use by the volunteer lawyers, heir clients, and members of the general public researching HIV-related issues.

The stigma attached to HIV infection, which cuts across all ethnic, racial, and economic lines, creates the need for an agency, such as the Council, devoted to making services truly accessible to all people.

The AIDS Legal Council of Chicago makes certain forms available on line through THE BODY. With the first installation of material, the AIDS Legal Council is including basic ILLINOIS forms for Powers of Attorney (for health care and for property) and Standby and Short-term Guardianship. The Council is NOT providing legal advice or representation to users of the Body. All readers/audiences are advised to consult their own attorneys before utilizing any of these forms.
