R. Anthony Vere Hodge, D. Phil. (Oxon.)

R. Anthony Vere Hodge graduated with a BA 1st Class Honors in 1966 from Trinity College Dublin. In 1969, he completed a D. Phil. in Natural Product Chemistry at Worcester College, Oxford under Sir Ewart Jones. He joined Beecham Pharmaceuticals (now SmithKline Beecham Pharmaceuticals, SB) in 1969 and has worked in various antiviral projects; he was part of the team that discovered penciclovir (1983) and famciclovir (1985) and was principal author of publications on the selection of famciclovir and the mode of action of penciclovir; seconded to Worldwide Strategic Product Development 1993 to assist the launch of famciclovir, associate director Anti-infectives Section Jan. 1995-Aug. 1996. Presently director of Vere Hodge Antivirals Ltd.
