NOLP Opens in South L.A.
Accessing Necessities of Life Services Is Now Easier for APLA Clients
APLA's Necessities of Life Program (NOLP) has opened a new location in South Los Angeles.
The site, located next to Spectrum's building "K" on King/Drew University's campus, opened on Jan. 31. The site is collaboration with Drew CARES/Spectrum HIV services.
All four NOLP locations -- the David Geffen Center, the North Hollywood site, APLA West and the new South L.A. site -- offer groceries and other goods, nutritional counseling and a monthly nutritional packet that includes fact sheets, dates for nutrition classes and low-fat and regular recipes based on the food that NOLP is providing for a particular month.
"It is extremely important for APLA to bring food and nutrition services closer to where clients reside," said Tonya Hendricks, manager of the Necessities of Life Program. "This is obvious with the expansion of food pantries at APLA West and now South Los Angeles. With the opening of our South Los Angeles food pantry, clients can access their medical, mental and food resources all in the same area."
Clients can participate in the program through referrals from their APLA Case Managers or Spectrum, which is a case management site. Referrals from other AIDS organizations are also accepted. The Oasis Medical Clinic and Spectrum work with NOLP to support independent living and bring food services to the community.
Other requirements to participate in the program include proof of residency and gross monthly income, which cannot exceed $830. Clients legally responsible for dependents should include an additional $241 toward their gross monthly income. A physician's diagnosis form that indicates a Karnofsky score as well as an acuity assessment completed by the client's case manager should also be submitted for NOLP consideration.
After the necessary documentation has been collected, clients can meet with an NOLP counselor who will assess the information. Clients who qualify for the program may start shopping immediately at any of the four locations. Those who do not qualify will receive other convenient food options from an NOLP Counselor.
