APIs face particular cultural challenges in dealing with HIV/AIDS within their communities. In these communities, privacy is valued, and the stigma associated with HIV-related diseases keeps some who need support and treatment services from seeking the help they need.
This is where APAIT comes in. By providing services in the client's home, rather than at a central clinic or location, they are able to reach the people who need them while respecting the dignity of those who fear their status or that of a loved one being disclosed.
APAIT has formed alliances with test and medical treatment sites, large HIV/AIDS service-providers and community-based organizations to provide the best and most comprehensive services possible for APIs in the Los Angeles area. APAIT's programs are culturally appropriate for the many and varied API communities within Los Angeles; programs offered are targeted to Cambodian, Chinese, Japanese, Filipino, Samoan, South Asian, Thai, Tongan and Vietnamese clients and their loved ones.
Services provided by APAIT include Buddy Program, case management, mental health counseling, support groups (HIV positive, bereavement, couples), treatment advocacy, educational workshops, information and resource referrals, and outreach and education.
