BP Conference: Club Drugs and Men's Health

BP Spotlight: Highlighting Programs and Services of Body Positive

December 2001

Article: BP Conference: Club Drugs and Men's Health

Each year, Body Positive sponsors a conference on a current issue of relevance and importance to the HIV/AIDS community. The conference provides an opportunity for people involved in the field of HIV/AIDS to get together, learn, and dialogue around a particular issue.

What is the theme of the conference?

This year's conference is entitled Club Drugs and Men's Health: A Community Forum. The conference is being sponsored by Body Positive, New York University, and the Center for HIV/AIDS Educational Studies and Training (CHEST). The conference will explore issues around club drugs and their effect on men's health, including:

  • sexual behaviors;

  • HIV/AIDS risk;

  • Ecstasy (MDMA) use;

  • the role of the "gay scene" in party drug use;

  • young men who have sex with men (MSM) of color and HIV seroconversion;

  • medical and health implications for both HIV-positive and HIV-negative users;

  • club drug use as a coping mechanism for young MSM;

  • the ethnography of club drug use;

  • HIV medication adherence and club drug use; and

  • initiatives to address these issues.

The conference will feature a number of experts in the field, including medical doctors and researchers. Throughout the course of this conference, we hope to explore issues of behavior around club drug use.

When is the conference?

The conference will take place on Saturday, January 12, 2002 from 9 am to 5 pm. It will be held at New York University in downtown Manhattan. The conference will include a continental breakfast, lunch, and afternoon coffee.

Who is it intended for?

Everyone is welcome! The conference is for anyone who would like to attend. We make an effort to choose issues that are relevant to health care providers, service providers, people with HIV/AIDS, and their loved ones. The conference is open to the public. However, advance registration is required.

How much does it cost?

Fees vary, but we will work with you to make the event affordable. Scholarships and group rates are available.
