More than 175 people gathered together at the Wessel + O'Connor Gallery in Chelsea for a Body Positive special event on December 1, 2000 to mark the 13th annual World AIDS Day. The BP benefit, entitled "Alive: A Collection of Contemporary Images," commemorated those we have already lost to HIV/AIDS while celebrating those who live on -- especially artists with HIV/AIDS.
Two highlights of the evening were the introduction of photographer John Dugdale, whose evocative, cyan-toned photos graced the walls of the gallery, and the announcement of the winner of the Body Positive logo design contest. The design of the contest winner, Fabio Prado-Barbosa, is displayed on this month's cover, while "honorable mentions" can be found on the last page of this issue.
A 33-year old originally from Brazil, Prado-Barbosa has worked in the graphic design industry for the last 10 years. "I was quite surprised when finding out the results of the logo contest," said Prado-Barbosa. "It helped affirm my dedication and passion for my profession." Describing the logo, which makes inventive use of both "positive" and "negative" space, BP Executive Director Michael Dentato noted "our new logo unites us with our past while invigorating us to work harder in the future."
AdvertisementThe evening, which was co-hosted by New York television reporters Sam Champion and Andrew Kirtzman, also included a silent auction of works by Dugdale, Ken Haak, and David Morgan. Body Positive wishes to thank all those who participated, as well as event co-sponsors HX Magazine, Absolut Vodka, East of Eighth, and Wolfer Estates/Sagpond Vineyards.
