And What's All This Buzz About "The HIVe?"
Body Positive has long been sponsoring social events for people living with HIV. But about three months ago, we started giving you such teasers as, "The HIVe is coming!" and "The boys are 'buzzing' about the HIVe" in several advertisements in HX and Body Positive magazines.
So what is The HIVe and how did it get started? It's an ongoing series of Body Positive-sponsored social events specifically for HIV-positive men. Among the events planned are dances, outdoor recreations, movies, and cultural trips, all with an emphasis on relaxation and enjoyment.
We've Been Busy Bees ...It all began at a Body Positive support group. Again and again, the conversation would turn to the fact that there are few outlets for HIV-positive gay men to meet in semi-structured social events. This information was conveyed to our support staff and the wheels started turning.
Soon a social committee was formed and thus began the HIVe. The committee is made up of several representatives from the community of people living with HIV/AIDS as well as several local AIDS service organizations. Organizations involved include: Gay Men of African Descent, Gay Men's Health Crisis (GMHC), The Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, and Transgender Community Center, the Latino Commission on AIDS, the Hispanic AIDS Forum, God's Love We Deliver, the Center for HIV/AIDS Educational Studies and Training (CHEST), Callen-Lorde Community Health Center, and STATSCRIPT Pharmacy.
The committee has been meeting on a regular basis and plans and discusses such issues as the location of the event, whether there will be a theme, how and where to advertise, what types of food and beverages to have, and so on. All committee voices are reflected in the decisions made. One of the main goals of The HIVe is to provide fun, interesting, safe and secure environments for HIV-positive guys and their friends.
Other Ongoing SocialsIn addition to The HIVe, Body Positive also provides the entire HIV/AIDS and affected community with events such as our long standing Social Friday Series, (serving the heterosexual HIV community, and open to all) which take place the first Friday of every month in the Ellington Room of the Manhattan Plaza building. The Body Positive Summer River Cruises, open to all, take place every summer. Events co-sponsored with Date Bait take place at different times throughout the year, and special occasional co-sponsored events with "Nothing but Guys" and "Guys & Gals" are also a part of the BP social scene.
For more information about the HIVe, or to learn more about any events sponsored by Body Positive, please contact BP at (212) 566-7333 and ask to speak to Tim (ext. 15) or Dana (ext. 14). Also, you can keep up to date with our social calendar by checking out our English and Spanish magazines (Body Positive and SIDAahora, respectively) or log on to www.bodypos.org or www.thebody.com to see what's happening.
