HIV/AIDS Prevention

Two New Books Are Now Available from the CDC National AIDS Clearinghouse

July, 1997

A note from TheBody.com: Since this article was written, the HIV pandemic has changed, as has our understanding of HIV/AIDS and its treatment. As a result, parts of this article may be outdated. Please keep this in mind, and be sure to visit other parts of our site for more recent information!

The first of two new prevention resources available from the CDC National AIDS Clearinghouse describes a successful community HIV prevention program. Community HIV Prevention: The Long Beach AIDS Community Demonstration Project provides a thorough description of a research-based intervention that was developed and evaluated as part of the CDC-sponsored 5-city AIDS Community Demonstration Projects. In Long Beach, this intervention addressed the needs of injecting drug users, their female sex partners, and female commercial sex workers.

The intervention used by the AIDS Community Demonstration Projects was based on the Stages of Change model and other behavioral theories. The intervention included the development of role model stories that portrayed how individuals overcame their personal barriers to HIV risk reduction. These stories were distributed in the community by networks of specially trained peer volunteers.

The 362-page book is designed to provide a hands-on understanding of the AIDS Community Demonstration Projects model. The first section of the book provides an overview of the projects, their theoretical foundation, and the research methodology. The second section details the implementation of the project in Long Beach and gives a summary of the research findings. The third section provides suggestions for the adaptation and replication of this intervention in other communities. Sample intervention materials and forms, which can be photocopied and used, are provided.

The second free book is entitled HIV Prevention Among Drug Users: A Resource Book for Community Planners and Program Managers. This book is being distributed to health departments, community co-chairs, and other prevention partners across the country and also is available from the CDC National AIDS Clearinghouse.

The HPDU Resource Book is intended to assist prevention planners and program managers in learning about and understanding the critical issues involved in drug use, sexual behavior, HIV transmission, and their interrelationships.

The first part of the book examines drug use and its effects. It includes information on major categories of drugs linked to HIV risk; patterns of drug use in the United States; definitions and characteristics of drug use, abuse, and dependence; and key components of the drug treatment system.

The second part of the book explores the link between drug use, sexual behavior, and HIV transmission and includes a discussion of the social context of drug use and how these factors influence risk for HIV infection.

The third part, on social and behavioral interventions, addresses theoretical and practical aspects of planning HIV prevention programs among drug users. It includes information on the results of social and behavioral research on intervention effectiveness.

Part four looks at several key public policy issues associated with HIV and drug use from a national, state, local, and agency perspective.

The final part focuses on resources. It contains information on an array of federal, national, state, and other programs that provide information, materials, and technical assistance services related to HIV prevention among drug users.

Appendices include summaries of individual evaluation studies conducted on successful interventions with various drug-using populations, as well as summaries of resources that address behavioral theories and research on HIV prevention interventions with drug users. They also include an extensive bibliography.

While supplies last, single copies of both books may be obtained by writing or calling the CDC National AIDS Clearinghouse.
