News Briefs California: Parents Invited to Meeting on Teen SexualityApril 28, 2003 An informative meeting about teens and sexuality, titled
"New Era of Sex Education," will be held April 30 at Los Cerros
Middle School in Danville, Calif., from 7-9 p.m. Linda Turnbull,
founder and director of Teen Esteem, will discuss issues facing
today's teens such as STDs, having sex too soon, and how these
affect teens emotionally. "Kids today are growing up in a
different world than in the past due to exposure of different
types of media, including the Internet. These sexual messages
create curiosity about sex at younger and younger ages, which
many times leads to experimentation," said Turnbull. In addition,
Julie Carpenter will address ways that parents can communicate
with their children about these issues. For questions about Teen
Esteem, a nonprofit that reaches out to teens and parents with
school programs and community events, telephone 925-828-3685.
