International News Australia Boosts Funding to Combat AIDSAugust 15, 2003 Prime Minister John Howard announced that Australia would spend $12.5 million (US$8.2 million) over five years to help combat HIV/AIDS in the Pacific region. Speaking at the Pacific Island Forum in Auckland, he said HIV/AIDS was a significant problem in many developing countries. "It poses serious social, economic and other development challenges," he said. Australia will increase aid by 43 percent as the threat of HIV/AIDS continues to grow in the region.
