United States Gives Uzbekistan Medical and Border Control Aid

On August 22, the United States gave the Uzbekistan Health Ministry hepatitis B vaccines and syringes worth more than $4.6 million under the Project Hope program sponsored by USAID, the US embassy said in a statement. The US State Department's Export Control and Related Border Security Assistance program gave the country's customs and border services communications equipment worth more than $1.8 million. The State Department's program is designed to prevent the proliferation of weapons of mass destruction. US relations with Uzbekistan, a former Soviet republic, have improved greatly since the country welcomed US troops in 2001 to support the military campaign in neighboring Afghanistan.
