International News Germany Contributes US$7.4 Million to Fight HIV/AIDS in the CaribbeanDecember 19, 2003 Yesterday, Germany announced it was contributing $7.4 million in grant funds designed to help prevent the spread of HIV/AIDS in the Caribbean. The country's development bank, the Kreditanstalt fuer Wiederaufbau, said it plans to distribute the funds through the Pan Caribbean Partnership Against HIV/AIDS, a Caribbean Community group of governments, private organizations and business leaders. With more than 2 percent of its population infected, the Caribbean has the world's second-highest HIV infection rate, after sub-Saharan Africa. "We hope that [the money is] going to have an impact on reducing the risks, which are spreading," said Helge Jahn, the bank's Nicaragua-based director for central America.
