UN: New Action on African AIDS Crisis

UN Secretary-General Kofi Annan plans to establish a high-level commission on AIDS and governance in Africa that would help countries provide essential public services while stemming the spread of the disease across the continent. Annan made the announcement while addressing the opening session of the Africa-France summit meeting in Paris. Annan said that in addition to devastating agricultural production, AIDS has weakened the most vital and productive sectors of African civil society, ushering in "a governance and development crisis of catastrophic dimensions."Adapted from:
