About 1,000 Romanian protesters trying to stop the opening of a TB hospital in their town clashed with riot police Monday night. The demonstrators fear they will get sick if TB patients are brought to their town, Scornicesti, which is about 125 miles west of Bucharest. Led by Mayor Tiberiu Mateescu, the protesters blocked an access road and the gates to the hospital, vowing to stop ambulances from bringing TB patients to the hospital. The Health Ministry tried to reassure residents that their health was not in danger, but Mateescu has threatened to cut the hospital off from public utilities if the government does not give up its plan.
