Norman, Okla., Nurse Loses License

January 31, 2003

On Thursday, the Oklahoma Board of Nursing revoked the license of a Norman nurse anesthetist accused of infecting dozens of patients with hepatitis C by reusing needles and syringes. The board also fined him nearly $100,000. The five-year licensure revocation of James Charles Hill is the maximum allowed under state statutes, although board members said they will petition the Legislature for harsher punishments for similar transgressions. Board investigator Betty Smelser said Hill told her he will never seek reinstatement.
