Florida: Teacher Who Demonstrated Condom Fired

January 31, 2003

School officials fired Naples, Fla. schoolteacher Colin Nicholas Thursday after he gave ninth graders a demonstration on condoms using mood lighting, music and a banana. The Collier County School Board gave no reason for the firing, asserting it was within its rights to dismiss any employee without cause during a 97-day probationary period. Nicholas said he never had proper sex education training and was never told condoms were not allowed in classrooms. His intent, he has maintained, was to simulate situations his students might face, because he believes teaching safe sex benefits students. Officials began their investigation in December after receiving complaints from some parents whose children told them about the condom lesson.
