June 11, 2003

About 1,000 cyclists rode through the Salinas, Calif., area Monday in a fundraising road trip to prevent HIV and help those infected. The 585-mile ride from San Francisco to Los Angeles began Sunday. Each cyclist raised a minimum of $2,500 to benefit the San Francisco AIDS Foundation and the Los Angeles Gay and Lesbian Center. As of Monday, the 997 riders had collected $4.1 million, topping last year's total of $3.2 million collected by 670 cyclists.
