Zambia: Union of Communication Workers Members to Receive Antiretrovirals

June 13, 2003

National Union of Communication Workers Secretary General Wellington Chella said on June 10 that plans are underway for members with HIV/AIDS to receive antiretrovirals. The members set to benefit from the effort are those from Zambia Telecommunications Limited and Zambia Postal Services. Chella said the management of these institutions was agreeable to the union's suggestion that the drugs be provided. Chella said the union reached this decision because of the high mortality rate among workers due to the pandemic. Employees will have to contribute 25 percent of the drugs' cost.
