Louisiana: Senate Committee Reworks $17 Billion Spending Plan

June 16, 2003

The Louisiana Senate Finance Committee approved a nearly $17 billion budget Sunday night, balancing the budget for the upcoming fiscal year. Among the amendments approved is the restoration of $720,000 to a condom distribution program that brings in federal cash for HIV/AIDS treatment. Senate President John Hainkel said he hoped the full Senate would take a look at the budget proposal on Wednesday. If the House does not agree to the Senate changes, a legislative compromise committee will hash out a final agreement.
