Correction: Minorities-HIV StoryJune 30, 2003 In a June 27 story about HIV rates among minorities, the
Associated Press erroneously reported some results of a study by
the Michigan Department of Community Health and CDC. [The
summarized version of the story appeared in the June 27 edition
of Prevention News Update.]
The AP story incorrectly reported that 34 percent of black
men said they engaged in bisexual behavior, followed by 26
percent of Hispanic men and 13 percent of white men. Those
percentages were among HIV-infected men who had sex with other
men -- not among the general male population.
Adapted from:The story also erroneously reported that in metropolitan Detroit, blacks represented 23 percent of the population but 87 percent of people living with HIV. According to the Department of Community Health, blacks make up 22 percent of the area's population and 68 percent of people there living with HIV. Finally, the story erroneously identified the study as the AIDS CARE study. Rather, the study will appear in the AIDS CARE medical journal.
