Innovative Intervention to Combat HIV/AIDS Due to Be Launched

June 9, 2003

The Regional Education Bureau of Addis Ababa, with support from the German Technical Cooperation, is launching a new tool to fight HIV/AIDS. The Move project, an intervention based on interpersonal communication between young people and professional health workers, has been used in schools, vocational training sites and among army personnel in various European countries. Ethiopia is the first non-European country to launch the program. In the project, 75 students will participate in educational diversions, and each one of these will convey specific information about one aspect of HIV/AIDS. Participants will be divided into smaller groups, where they will use their previous knowledge to ask questions and solve problems. The topics to be discussed are methods of transmission, living with HIV, gender roles, the use of condoms, and STDs.
