Dr. Torres is board certified in Internal Medicine. In addition to caring for patients with HIV, he is actively involved in research for treating and preventing HIV and its associated opportunistic infections.
He had received funding for research from the National Institutes of Health/NIAIDS, the American Foundation for AIDS Research, the Rudin Foundation, Hoffmann-La Roche, Schering Plough, Glaxo Wellcome, Agouron Pharmaceuticals and Serono Labs.
Dr. Torres was born in Ponce, Puerto Rico in 1958, earned an undergraduate degree from New York University, and received his M.D. at Columbia University in 1984. Upon completion of an internship and an internal medicine residency at St. Vincent's Hospital from 1984-1987, Dr. Torres served as the chief resident of the Department of Medicine from 1987-88.
Dr. Torres has also served as an Attending Physician to the Hospital's Departments of Community Medicine and to the AIDS Center since 1988. He became the Medical Director of the AIDS center in 1990.
In addition to serving on the boards of a number of AIDS service organizations (Community Health Project, LIFEbeat, Latino Commission on AIDS) and city, state and federal government panels (AIDS Advisory Council of the New York State AIDS Institute, HIV Health and Human Services Planning Council of New York City, AIDS Clinical Drug Development Committee (PHS/NIH), NIH/OAR State-of-the-Art Review Panel), Dr. Torres oversees the monthly treatment newsletter, Treatment Issues, of the Gay Men's Health Crisis.
