Dr. Pavia is board certified in Internal Medicine and Infectious Diseases. In addition to caring for patients with HIV, he is heavily involved in research on the development of new agents and new strategies for treating HIV and opportunistic infections. His other research interests include the epidemiology of foodborne diseases and E. coli O157:H7 infections.
He has received funding for research from Bristol Myers Squibb, Chiron Corporation, Gilead Sciences and Merck.
A native New Yorker, Dr. Pavia received his M.D. at Brown University in Providence, Rhode Island, then completed a residency in Internal Medicine and served as chief.resident at Dartmouth Hitchcock Medical Center. He was an officer in the Epidemic Intelligence Service at the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention in Atlanta, Georgia, and completed a residency in Preventive Medicine, also at the CDC. He completed his Infectious Diseases training at the University of Utah. In 1989 he helped to found the AIDS clinic at the University of Utah and served as clinic co-director and director until 1994.
