Zimbabwe: Organization to Push for Holistic Treatment of AIDS

May 20, 2003

A newly formed organization, Zimbabwe Activists on HIV and AIDS has embarked on an intensive project to advocate for holistic treatment of AIDS and related conditions. The lobby will be conducted under the theme "Treat the People Now: Access to Treatment on HIV/AIDS is a Human Right." ZAHA Coordinator Believe Dhliwayo said, "The challenge is to engage all interested parties and speak with one voice. The problem at the moment is that a lot has been happening but the efforts have been disjointed." "We very much appreciate what the government has been doing and we want to take it up from there together and would like to see great involvement of people living with HIV and AIDS in these initiates." The government is already giving nevirapine to expecting mothers at 35 centers in the country. The government also last May declared a six-month emergency period to deal with HIV/AIDS.
