Lawmakers: Tuberculosis in Ukraine Threatens National Security

TB is threatening the national security of Ukraine and authorities are doing little to combat the disease, lawmakers warned during parliamentary hearings on Monday. In recent years, TB cases have doubled, and the death rate from the disease has increased, Yuriy Poliachenko, a top Health Ministry official, was quoted as saying. Of the 670,000 people infected with TB, 139,000 are in serious condition, he said. Leading TB specialist Yuriy Feshchenko criticized the government efforts to combat TB and said doctors do not get enough money to fight the disease. Feshchenko went on to say that a diagnostic center that should have opened four years ago has not opened. Last week, Ukraine's Health Ministry received US$480,000 from the Global Fund to Fight AIDS, TB and Malaria. In addition, the country signed an agreement with the World Bank for a US$60 million loan to stem the rapid spread of TB and AIDS.
