California High School Tests Students for TB

About 150 students at Ygnacio Valley High School in Concord, Calif., will be tested today for TB after being exposed to the bacterial infection by a classmate, said Contra Costa Public Health Director Wendel Brunner. An unidentified boy at the school came down with TB in March. He has been undergoing treatment and is no longer infectious, Brunner said. Although public health officials are taking the situation seriously, Brunner said there is no cause for panic by anyone at the school, which has 1,600 students. The strain of TB the boy had is fully treatable. Contra Costa gets about 60 to 80 cases of TB a year.
