Wyoming: School Board Calls for "Abstinence Only"May 21, 2003 This article is part of TheBody.com's archive. The Sweetwater County, Wyo., School District No. 2 board has told Superintendent Jimmy Phelps to make "abstinence only" the approach to sex education for middle school children. The new policy prohibits discussions about condoms and other contraception and may apply to a video that has been shown to sixth-graders. According to teacher Pam Wolfe, part of the video discusses contraception and other issues that do not conform to the order. Also in violation are optional assignments in the seventh- and eighth-grade elective Teen Life and Child Care classes, created four years ago by a community advisory board that included local doctors, parents, clergy and businessmen. "I'm not sure where you draw the line on abstinence-based and abstinence-only," said board President Marsha Tynsky. Tynsky said the board is reviewing a previous board's decision about the classes. There were 74 STD cases reported in the county last year, including one case of AIDS, two cases of HIV, four cases of gonorrhea and 67 cases of chlamydia.
