Mozambique: Business Needs to Do its Part in the Fight Against AIDS

November 6, 2003

Some Mozambican businesses are still victimizing people with HIV, activists said Wednesday at the close of an AIDS conference in Maputo designed to encourage partnerships between government and the private sector. "There are still companies in Mozambique that fire people with AIDS because they are scared they will infect other workers," said Nyeleti Mondlane of Vida Positiva, an AIDS support group. "The private sector has no tradition of being involved in the struggle against AIDS," she said. "They have to understand that AIDS is a problem not only for their human resources departments, but for the entire society." A separate five-day conference on AIDS and regional food supplies will end Friday.
