International News Guyana's President, Bush to Meet Privately During UN General Assembly MeetingSeptember 19, 2003 President Bharrat Jagdeo of Guyana and U.S. President Bush will have breakfast Sept. 24 on the final day of the two-day UN General Assembly meeting in New York, Jagdeo's office said. The leaders will discuss bilateral trade relations, aid to Guyana, and help in combating HIV/AIDS in the South American country of 700,000. The Caribbean has the world's second highest HIV rate after sub-Saharan Africa, with an estimated 500,000 infected in the region. Guyana and Haiti are the only two Caribbean nations to benefit from Bush's five-year, $15 billion initiative to fight AIDS in Africa and the Caribbean. The U.S. has already released about $1 million to private organizations in Guyana for HIV/AIDS counseling, and CDC has sent specialists to work with the country's health ministry.
