Vietnamese, U.S. Militaries Discuss Cooperation in HIV/AIDS Prevention
April 13, 2004 On Monday, the Vietnamese and U.S. militaries began a four-day workshop to discuss measures to strengthen cooperation in HIV/AIDS prevention. The workshop aims to improve knowledge and awareness of HIV/AIDS issues in military forces, the Vietnam News reported Tuesday. Difficulties in fighting HIV/AIDS, prevention measures, and laboratory training improvements in Vietnam were issues discussed. The workshop is the first such activity the U.S. Pacific Command's Bilateral Military HIV/AIDS Program has had that relates to the Vietnamese military. The program is funded by the U.S. Department of Defense's HIV/AIDS Prevention Program. Three similar workshops will be held in the future. Of Vietnam's 80,000 HIV cases, 12,116 have AIDS and nearly 7,000 have died.
