AIDS Amplifies Cancer Cases in Uganda
April 13, 2004 The Uganda Cancer Institute has recorded more than 3,200 cancer patients annually in the past two years -- treble the approximately 1,000 patients in the past -- and over 70 percent of them have AIDS-related cancers including Kaposi's sarcoma and lymphomas, said Mulago Hospital Director Dr. Lawrence Kaggwa, the Ugandan newspaper New Vision reported Monday. "The underlying deficiency in someone with HIV exposes the patient to variety of opportunistic infections especially Kaposi sarcoma," said another expert, the institute's Dr. J. Orem.
