International News Queen Noor of Jordan Expresses Concern About Spread of HIV/AIDS in TajikistanApril 20, 2004 On Monday in Dushanbe, visiting Queen Noor of Jordan expressed concern about HIV's rapid spread in Tajikistan. However, she also expressed optimism that the nation can be "the first to arrest the spread of the disease, perhaps more quickly than any other country of the world." Tajikistan has one of the lowest reported HIV caseloads in the world -- 152 infections -- but one of the highest rates of infection. The number of cases is actually around 2,500 according to UN and Tajik officials, who estimate that figure will double annually without intervention. Tajikistan is situated on one of the main drug-smuggling routes from neighboring Afghanistan. Drug use is up in Central Asia, where intravenous drug use is the main transmission route for HIV.
