International News Romania: U.S. Ambassador Opens Ward for Children With HIV in Black Sea PortApril 7, 2004 On Tuesday, U.S. Ambassador Michael Guest opened a clinic for HIV-infected children in the Black Sea port city of Constanta, Romania. U.S. drug maker Abbott Laboratories and Baylor College of Medicine have invested more than $8 million over the past three years in the HIV children's ward in Constanta, a city with 450 HIV-infected children. Officials report it has contributed to a drop in infant mortality from 15 percent to 3 percent. Similar clinics using a combination of drugs and nursing care are planned for Mexico and Botswana, said Mark Klein, a U.S. pediatrician who has worked on the program.
