International News WHO to Provide Antiretroviral Drugs to Ethiopian AIDS PatientsAugust 5, 2004 The World Health Organization will provide free or low-cost antiretroviral drugs to 150,000 HIV/AIDS patients in Ethiopia by 2005, Dr. Endalemaw Abera, a national HIV/AIDS officer with WHO, said Thursday. The Ethiopian drug distribution is part of WHO's "3 by 5" initiative to provide antiretrovirals to 3 million HIV/AIDS patients in poor countries by 2005. Abera said international experts from WHO's African Regional Office in Brazzaville, Congo, and from its Geneva headquarters would soon arrive in Ethiopia to facilitate the treatment program.
