Zambian Politicians Urged to Take HIV Test

August 9, 2004

Kenneth Kaunda, Zambia's former president, urged political leaders in the country to take HIV tests, the local Saturday Post reported. "Testing is something you do hoping our political leaders will also be listening," said Kaunda, adding that he has taken several HIV tests. The first Zambian president also renewed his call for condom promotion as a key way to prevent the spread of HIV/AIDS. In recent years, Zambia's HIV/AIDS infection rate has dropped from 26 percent to 16 percent but Kaunda said more work is needed. "I urge all those fighting the pandemic to continue. There is no room for complacency at any time," he said.
