HIV Numbers Declining in Mississippi

December 30, 2004

As of Dec. 31, 2003, Mississippi reported 7,387 people with HIV/AIDS, according to Craig Thompson, director of STD/HIV with the state Department of Health. The number of cases has been on the decline since 1996, he said. In descending order, the top 10 counties for HIV incidence were Hinds, Harrison, Rankin, Forrest, Jackson, Madison, Warren, Jones, Washington, and DeSoto. Of total state HIV/AIDS cases, 68.7 percent were male; 31.3 percent were female; 71.3 percent were African American; 25.2 percent were Caucasian; 31.4 percent were men who have sex with men; 20.7 percent were heterosexual; and 8.3 percent reported intravenous drug use. No risk category was reported for 39.7 percent.
