Estonia: 840 New HIV Cases Registered in Estonia in 2003

January 12, 2004

According to preliminary data, health authorities in Estonia registered 840 news HIV cases last year. The number was down by 60 from 2002, but this does not necessarily mean the virus' spread is slowing down, according to Lea Tammai of Tallinn's Merimetsa Hospital, who said a new rise could occur next year. Sexual transmission of HIV has become more frequent, and HIV rates are highest among sexually active 15- to 24-year-olds. Last year, 114 pregnant women were diagnosed with HIV, 31 of whom have given birth. As of Jan. 1, Estonia had 3,621 HIV-positive people and 16 AIDS patients.
