Switzerland to Offer HIV/AIDS Test to All Asylum Seekers

January 20, 2004

On Sunday, Roger Staub of the Federal Public Health Office (OFSP) said Switzerland would offer voluntary HIV testing to all new asylum applicants as part of a package of health advice available to all asylum seekers. After several years of decline, Swiss HIV rates have increased since 2000, according to OFSP figures published last month. The highest infection rates are among immigrants from areas such as sub-Saharan Africa. Switzerland has the highest HIV infection rate in Western Europe, with 20,000 reported cases in a population of 8 million.
