Uganda to Provide Free AIDS Drugs to Needy People

January 21, 2004

The government of Uganda has finalized a policy to provide free antiretroviral drugs to needy people living with AIDS, according to Minister of State for Health Alex Kamugisha. About 100,000 people are expected to receive the drugs, which the minister said would also be provided at a small fee to those less poor. Kamugisha said HIV/AIDS has eaten into resources that could have been used for other national programs, and that the responsibility for combating HIV/AIDS rests with every citizen. Recently, the Global Fund to Fight HIV/AIDS, TB and Malaria gave Uganda $54 million and the World Bank contributed $3 million to fund the free drugs.
