Kentucky: House Passes HIV Names-Reporting Bill

January 21, 2004

Among other actions yesterday, the Kentucky House passed, 95-0, a bill requiring doctors to report HIV-infected people to the state by name, not by special code. The change would improve the state's chances of getting federal HIV treatment money, according to Rep. Tom Burch (D-Louisville), the bill's sponsor. Under the bill, patients would be identified by name in the state's database, although case reports to CDC would continue to use code numbers. The measure now goes to the state Senate.
