Australia Doubles Its AIDS Fight Contribution to $US430 Million

July 12, 2004

Australia pledged Sunday to more than double its contribution to AIDS programs in Asia-Pacific, especially Papua New Guinea. It was not clear if the contribution is destined for the Global Fund to Fight AIDS, TB and Malaria or to other independent programs. The $350 million (Australian) (US$250 million) increase raises to $600 million (Australian) (US$430 million) the amount the nation has budgeted until 2010 to avert an "African-style" tragedy, said Foreign Minister Alexander Downer.
