UNICEF Says 25,000 Honduran Children Orphaned by AIDS

July 23, 2004

At least 25,500 children in Honduras are now AIDS orphans, said a UNICEF report released this week. "The consequences of AIDS are simply devastating and they undermine the hopes for development of any people," Fernando Lazcano, a local UNICEF representative, said at a news conference Wednesday to announce aid for orphanages that will house 2,000 children around the country. While Honduras has just 17 percent of Central America's population, it has 60 percent of its AIDS cases, said Lazcano. Honduran cities on the Atlantic coast are most affected by the virus, which the government estimates has infected 65,000 people.
