Condoms Join Carbines as Kit for Indonesian Soldiers: Report

July 2, 2004

Some 220 military officers received a box of condoms and articles on HIV/AIDS after they completed a two-week course on peer leadership in preventing STDs, according to the Jakarta Post. "I can't blame those who may think that distributing condoms for soldiers will encourage them to have sex out of wedlock," said Rear Marshall Pieter Wattimena, but he added that soldiers need condoms "especially when they are joining a military operation far from home." The Defense Ministry has asked the national family planning board to install condom vending machines in places accessible to soldiers deployed on missions, Wattimena said.
