International News AIDS Patients to Receive Free Drugs for First Time in EgyptJuly 7, 2004 Health Minister Tag Eddin has announced that HIV/AIDS patients in Egypt will begin receiving free antiretrovirals for the first time, according to a report today in the semi-official al-Ahram daily. The minister said only two people out of 1 million are infected with HIV/AIDS each year, and no more than 650 people in Egypt are living with the virus. In the mid-1990s, the health ministry -- after years of denying the existence of HIV in Egypt -- established its first HIV/AIDS center and patient hotline.
