Women Alive Activities

Summer 2000

Arts & Crafts
Back by popular demand! Get together for fun and relaxation. Make something nice. Keep it or use it as a gift for someone else. Meets every Thursday at alternating locations. Twice a month in Compton/Lynwood area and twice a month in the Mid-City area.

Young Women
Support group and education for HIV-positive women under the age of 25. Group meets at "The Village". Call Brenda Calderon for more information: 800.554.4876.

Positive Recovery Group
A 12-step group for women living with HIV or an AIDS diagnosis who are also recovering from addiction to drugs and/or alcohol. Every Thursday from 2:00 pm to 3:30 pm. 1566 S. Burnside Avenue. To join the group, please call Mae at 1.800.554.4876

Group Therapy
Therapeutic support group for women with HIV/AIDS. Meets the first and third Saturday of every month. Group is facilitated by a professional licensed therapist. Mid-City location. Call 323.965.1564 ask for Tammy.

Heterosexuals Too (2)!
Coming this October to Long Beach. Women Alive will host a bi-monthly support group for heterosexual women and men. Call Brenda for exact time and location. Intake is required. 323.965.1564

Women-Focused Medical Updates:
Women Alive hosts regularly scheduled medical updates with a focus on what's new for women with HIV/AIDS. Educational dinners are an excellent way to stay up to date with information on medications to treat HIV infection. To reserve your seat at the next update call Tammy at 323.965.1564.

Voices With a Message: Peer Support & Treatment Information Hotline
Operated by women volunteers, who are themselves, living with HIV/AIDS. Treatment information is available upon request and a peer Treatment Educator is ready to talk about your treatment concerns. Monday, Wednesday and Friday 11am to 6pm. 800.554.4876. Se habla Español. To volunteer call Ana: 323.965.1564.

Marilyn Howell Memorial HIV Center for Women
Come join us at our new center for a support group for women living with HIV/AIDS. The group is held the 2nd and 4th Wednessday of each month 5:00-7:00pm. 2645 Industry Way, Lynwood 323.564.9899.

Heterosexuals Too!
Enjoy an evening with people who share common issues, fears, hopes and concerns in a safe and friendly atmosphere. A peer support group for HIV+ heterosexual women and men. Intake is required, call Tammy. 323.965.1564.

Latinas Activas
Every Thursday at 5:30 pm - 1566 S. Burnside Ave. Call in advance to arrange transportation or child care. For more info call Marina 323.965.1564.

Treatment Information and Advocacy Program
If you have questions about your medical care, treatments and/or lab work, and/or if you need someone to go with you to your doctors appointment: call Marina, Cathy, LaVerne, Brenda, and/or Mae -- Our Treatment Advocate Team can be reached either by calling the hotline number 800.554.4876 or the office number at 323.965.1564.(Bilingual Spanish speaking available.)

Legal Clinic
Third Wednesday of every month 3:00-6:00pm. One-on-one consultations provided by a female attorney. Get your legal questions answered. By appointment only, 24 hrs in advance. Call Tammy 323.965.1564.

Positive Images
Many of us living with the virus sometimes don't feel good about ourselves. But when we get together and hang out, we find that we're not so different after all.

Join Positive Images, The Women. "The Party-Line" a support group on the phone for women. CALL 1.888.600.4767 Tuesday 7-9pm. Every Thursday is "Co-Ed Night" on the chat line so, tell Mr. boyfriend to call in too. For more information call Tammy -- 323.965.1564.

HIV/AIDS Library
The Lori Levine Memorial Library has extensive HIV/AIDS information from over 200 sources.

Heterosexual + Mixer
The last Saturday of Every month. Barbeque, music, friends and fun. Children are welcome. Transportation as budgets allow. Starts at 1pm, goes until 4pm at 2645 Industry Way in Lynwood. 323.965.1564.

Mental Health Counseling
Specialized counseling is available for the whole family. Whether it's mom or the kids who are having a hard time coping with HIV, help is available. Therapy for those with HIV infection is offered.

Become a Promotora
If you are interested in becoming a community educator, sign up for the training. Learn HIV/AIDS prevention information and share it with others. Completion certificates are awarded at the end of the training. Stipends are provided for those who train others in their own neighborhoods. Peer Support Training
Become a Trained Peer Supporter: The HotLine/Peer training is scheduled for September/October. Completion certificates are awarded. Stipends are provided for those who provide peer-to-peer support on the national HotLine/back to the workforce project: "Voices With A Message".
