International News Zambia's Kaunda Tells Zimbabwe to Unite in Fight Against AIDSJune 17, 2004 Former Zambian President Kenneth Kaunda on Thursday told delegates to Zimbabwe's first AIDS conference they must put aside political differences in order to battle HIV/AIDS. "This thing [AIDS] does not know politics at all, this thing does not even know religion," Kaunda said to the audience of more than 700 government officials, opposition parties, civic groups, NGOs, and health-care providers in attendance. "I am not saying forget your politics, I am not saying forget your religion? [but] let us come together, let us fight together and destroy this thing before it destroys us." Kaunda called on attendees to "see the real situation in Zimbabwe that calls for all of us to come together and fight again," referring to past victories over slavery and colonialism. Kaunda's son died of AIDS in 1986. Agence France Presse 06.17.2004 This article was provided by U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.
